About the Mazda 2

The Mazda 2 is the driver's choice among the small hatchbacks and the best-finished cabin at this price in our fleet. Unlike most rivals it uses a conventional six-speed torque-converter automatic rather than a CVT, which makes it feel more responsive and less droning on hill climbs. The interior materials, the seats and the driving position are a clear step above the Yaris and the Swift.

What is included

  • Comprehensive first-class insurance with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) is included with every rental - there is no separate insurance upsell at handover.
  • Minimum rental period is 3 days.
  • A refundable security deposit of ฿3,000 covers the insurance excess. It is returned in full if it is not used.
  • Delivery and collection anywhere on Koh Samui - your hotel, villa or the airport - are included in the rate.

Any minor damage is deducted from the deposit and the balance returned. We photograph every panel, the interior, the fuel or charge level and the odometer at handover, and you get those timestamped photos with your digital contract - so there is a record to compare against rather than an argument.

Who the Mazda 2 suits

Couples who want the cheapest bracket of car without the cheapest-feeling cabin, and anyone who actually enjoys driving. It carries the same two large cases as the other hatchbacks - you are paying for quality, not space.

The Mazda 2 on Koh Samui roads

The real six-speed automatic is the thing to know about here. On Samui's short, steep climbs a CVT tends to hold high revs and sound strained; the Mazda's conventional gearbox simply changes down and gets on with it. Combined with the sharpest steering of any small car we rent, it makes the interior roads and the switchbacks up to the viewpoints genuinely enjoyable rather than merely survivable.

Mazda 2 rental - frequently asked questions

Why does the Mazda 2 cost more than a Toyota Yaris?

Better interior, more standard equipment including Apple CarPlay and leather, and a conventional six-speed automatic instead of a CVT. Space and running costs are much the same - you are paying for how it feels, not what it carries.

Is the Mazda 2 a hatchback or a sedan?

We rent the five-door hatchback. Mazda sells a sedan version in Thailand too; if you specifically need a separate locked boot, tell us at booking and we will confirm availability.

Is the Mazda 2 economical on fuel?

Yes, around 5 litres per 100 km in island driving, essentially identical to the Yaris and Swift. The six-speed automatic is if anything slightly better on the open ring road than a CVT.
