Hatchbacks
Hatchbacks are the cheapest way to have a car on Koh Samui and the easiest thing to park once you get to Chaweng. Two adults travel with full luggage, four travel light, and the 1.2-1.5 litre engines are more than enough for an island where you will rarely exceed 80 km/h.
Sedans
Sedans cost a little more than hatchbacks on Koh Samui and buy you two things: a separate locked boot that nobody can see into, and a quieter, more settled car on the ring road. For four adults with luggage doing a week of island driving, this is the value sweet spot.
Crossovers
A crossover buys you ground clearance and a commanding view over the traffic, for roughly ฿300-500 a day more than the equivalent sedan. On Koh Samui the clearance is the part that actually matters.
SUVs
Seven seats plus real ground clearance, for groups who need both. These are body-on-frame or raised SUVs built for Thai roads, and they are the default choice for larger families and for groups who would rather share one vehicle than split across several.
MPVs
An MPV gives you the same seven seats as an SUV with far better access and a lower floor, at the cost of ground clearance. For families moving in and out of the car a dozen times a day, it is usually the better tool.
Pickups
Pickups are everywhere on Koh Samui because they suit the place: high clearance for the hill roads, a bed that carries anything, and diesel engines that are cheap to run over a long rental.
Which car should you rent on Koh Samui?
Koh Samui is a 51 km ring road with a mountainous interior, and that geography decides most of the choice. On the flat coastal strip in Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut or Maenam, a hatchback or sedan is cheaper, easier to park and entirely adequate. Up in the hills, where a great many villas are, the climbs are steep and patched after rain, low-slung sedans scrape, and you want a crossover, an SUV or a pickup.
The second question is luggage rather than passengers, and it is the one that catches families out. A hatchback boot takes two large cases; a sedan takes two plus two cabin bags; a Toyota Corolla Cross or Honda CR-V is the smallest car here that handles a four-person airport arrival with nothing on anybody’s knees. An SUV with all seven seats occupied carries soft bags rather than suitcases. With small children, the features that matter are sliding doors, a low floor and rear air vents, which points at the MPVs unless your villa is up a hill.
Pricing, and what every rate includes
Every model page publishes six rate figures, day, week and month in both low and high season, alongside the deposit and the minimum rental period. High season runs December to March and July to August. Inside every rate: comprehensive first-class insurance with Collision Damage Waiver, delivery and collection anywhere on the island, 24/7 roadside assistance and unlimited mileage. Nothing is quoted on request, and nothing appears at handover that was not on the page when you booked.
Not charged for: airport delivery, a second named driver, the standard clean between rentals, the excess-reduction product you would otherwise be sold at a counter, and the ordinary sand and dust of a week on a tropical island.
Fuel, mileage and cleaning
Fuel is full to full. The car arrives full with the gauge photographed. If it comes back short we charge pump price for the difference and nothing else: no service fee, no rounding up, no prepaid-fuel package to decline. Mileage is unlimited, and the odometer is photographed at both ends as part of the condition record, not as the basis for a distance charge. Cleaning is our cost. Beach sand, dust and damp towels are what a rental car here is for. The exception is specialist work after smoke, vomit, spilled fuel or heavy pet hair, where you see the invoice and the amount before anything is deducted.
Insurance, deposit and your passport
Every car carries comprehensive first-class commercial insurance covering third-party liability, damage and theft. Your maximum exposure in an at-fault incident is the security deposit, stated on each model page, and nothing beyond that figure can be claimed from you for damage to the car. That cap is the number worth checking before any rental anywhere. We never hold your passport as collateral, which remains common practice on the island and is something you should decline wherever you meet it.
Delivery, the photo record and your deposit back
We deliver anywhere on Koh Samui at no charge: airport arrivals, your hotel, your villa or a pier. Give us your flight number and we watch the arrival. At handover we photograph every panel, the wheels, the interior, the fuel gauge and the odometer into your digital contract, so walk round with the driver and have anything you notice added to the record.
Collection reverses it, and we compare the two sets in front of you. If nothing has changed, the deposit is back on your card within three bank days. If something has, you get both sets of photographs and an itemised garage invoice at the price the garage charges us, and we deduct only that. Ordinary wear, stone chips from the ring road and a car that simply looks used are not charged for.
Licence and International Driving Permit
You need your national licence and an International Driving Permit, obtained in your home country because it cannot be issued in Thailand. Checkpoints on Route 4169 do ask, and driving without one can void your insurance in an accident. Minimum driver age is 21 with a year of experience; a second driver costs nothing to add.
Renting for a month or longer
Monthly rates are published on every model page and work out at roughly seventeen days of hire for thirty days of use. Insurance, servicing, tyres and roadside assistance stay with us, and we schedule the service around your week. Against buying a used car here, weigh the paperwork, the maintenance risk on unknown history and the discount you will take to sell again when you leave. A rolling rental also lets the vehicle change with your circumstances.
Driving on Koh Samui, and leaving it
Thailand drives on the left. The practical hazards on Route 4169 are scooters emerging from side roads, dogs, and sudden rain that turns the surface slippery within seconds. Fuel is easy to find on the ring road and scarce inland, so fill up before heading into the interior, and parking in Chaweng and Lamai is tight enough to be an argument for a small car.
The Raja and Seatran vehicle ferries carry cars to Don Sak on the mainland in about ninety minutes, and from there it is roughly two hours to Khao Sok National Park. Tell us at booking if you plan to leave the island, so the paperwork and insurance cover it, and book the ferry ahead in high season: vehicle space fills before passenger space does.
How this compares with the alternatives
Against an airport counter: you queue after a long flight, and the counter is where excess-reduction products and fuel packages get sold. We bring the car to you at no charge, and there is nothing left to sell when it arrives.
Against a travel-site booking: those are fulfilled by whichever local supplier the platform assigns, so the car, the photo record and the contract terms vary with it. Ours are identical whichever vetted partner supplies the vehicle.
Against taxis or a scooter: for one or two trips a day taxis are fine; for a family over a week they cost more and remove the thing most people came for, which is stopping at the viewpoint you just passed. A scooter is right for a solo traveller with a backpack, and wrong with children, luggage or an afternoon of monsoon rain.

How much does it cost to rent a car on Koh Samui?
Our petrol and diesel cars run from ฿700 a day in low season for a Toyota Yaris or Suzuki Swift, up to ฿4,400 a day in high season for a Mercedes-Benz C-Class. A typical family crossover is ฿1,400-1,700 a day. Weekly rates work out at roughly six days of hire and monthly rates at around seventeen, so a long stay costs substantially less per day. That figure is the whole cost: insurance, delivery, collection, roadside assistance and unlimited mileage are inside it, and there is nothing to add at handover.
What is included in the insurance?
Every rental includes comprehensive first-class insurance with a Collision Damage Waiver, covering third-party liability, damage and theft. Your liability in an at-fault incident is capped at the security deposit. There is no insurance upsell at handover and no daily excess-reduction product to decline - the price quoted at booking is the price you pay.
What deposit do you take, and do you keep my passport?
We never take your passport, and you should decline that wherever it is asked of you on the island. The deposit is a card payment of ฿3,000 to ฿10,000 depending on the vehicle class, stated on every model page before you book. It covers the insurance excess and comes back in full when the car returns in the condition shown in the handover photographs.
How long does the deposit take to come back?
Three bank days from collection, and often sooner, refunded to the card that paid it. If there is genuine damage we send you the handover photographs, the collection photographs and an itemised invoice from the garage doing the work, deduct only that amount, and return the balance on the same timetable. Nothing is deducted before you have seen what it is for.
What is the fuel policy?
Full to full. The car arrives with a full tank and the gauge photographed at handover, and you bring it back full. If it comes back short we charge the pump price for the missing fuel and nothing on top - no refuelling service fee and no rounding up. There is no prepaid fuel package, because a prepaid tank is only ever a good deal for the rental company.
Is there a mileage limit?
No. Every rental has unlimited mileage. We photograph the odometer at handover and again at collection as part of the condition record, not to bill you for distance. If you are taking the car to the mainland on the vehicle ferry, tell us at booking - that is about insurance and paperwork rather than a mileage charge.
Will you charge me a cleaning fee?
Not for ordinary island use. Sand in the footwells, beach dust, damp towels on the seats and the general state of a car after a week here are expected, and the standard clean between rentals is our cost, not yours. The only exception is a car that needs specialist work - cigarette smoke, vomit, spilled fuel or heavy pet hair - and in that case you see the cleaner's invoice and the amount before anything is taken from the deposit.
How do I know the car will really fit my family and our luggage?
Because we publish the numbers instead of the adjectives. Every model page lists the seat count, the door count and how many bags the boot actually takes, and every category page says where that category stops: a hatchback boot is two large cases, a Toyota Corolla Cross or Honda CR-V is the smallest car here that takes a family of four with full airport luggage, and an SUV with all seven seats occupied carries soft bags rather than suitcases. If your group is borderline, send us the number of people and bags before you book and we will tell you honestly which cars work.
Can you supply child seats?
Yes - infant, child and booster seats, fitted to the rear ISOFIX anchors before the car is delivered, so nobody is assembling anything in an airport car park. Tell us your children's ages and weights at booking. Phone mounts and GPS units are available too, though phone navigation covers the whole island perfectly well.
Which car should I rent for Koh Samui hill roads?
Anything with raised ride height. The climbs to hill villas above Chaweng Noi, Bophut and Taling Ngam, and the interior roads to the viewpoints and waterfalls, are steep and often patched or washed out after rain. A Toyota Yaris Cross or Honda HR-V handles almost all of them; for genuinely rough unsealed tracks take a Toyota Fortuner or a pickup. Low-slung sedans will scrape.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car on Koh Samui?
Yes. Thai law requires foreign visitors to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence. Police checkpoints on the ring road do ask for it, and driving without one can invalidate your insurance in the event of a claim. Get the IDP in your home country before you travel - it cannot be issued in Thailand.
Do you deliver the car to my hotel or the airport?
Yes, anywhere on Koh Samui, and delivery and collection are included in the rate. Most customers have the car waiting at Samui Airport arrivals or brought to their hotel or villa on the morning the rental starts. Give us your flight number and we track the arrival, so a delayed landing does not mean a missed handover or a queue at a counter.
Can I take a rental car on the ferry to the mainland?
Yes, and many customers do - the Raja and Seatran vehicle ferries run from Koh Samui to Don Sak, and from there it is about two hours to Khao Sok National Park. Tell us at booking so the paperwork and insurance cover mainland travel, and so we can note where our support network reaches on that side. Larger SUVs like the Isuzu MU-X and Ford Everest are the most comfortable for it.
What happens if I have an accident?
People first: get everyone out of the traffic, and call 1669 for an ambulance or 191 for the police if anyone is hurt. Then photograph the scene through the app before the vehicles are moved, if it is safe to leave them, and call our 24/7 line. We talk you through the Thai process, deal with the insurer directly, and send a replacement car so the rest of your trip continues. Fault in a multi-vehicle incident is settled by the insurers and the police report, not by us, and your liability is capped at the deposit either way.
What happens if the car breaks down?
Call our 24/7 support line and we dispatch roadside assistance. If the vehicle cannot be fixed where it is, we recover it and bring a replacement of the same or a higher category so your trip continues. Breakdown cover is included in every rental at no extra cost, and it applies on the mainland as well as on the island.
