The Toyota Yaris Ativ is the saloon version of the Yaris and the most rented economy sedan in Thailand. Same 1.2-litre engine and CVT gearbox as the hatchback, but with a separate 470-litre boot that swallows two large suitcases out of sight. It is a plain, extremely reliable car with the widest parts and service network on the island, and for a week of Samui driving it is hard to justify spending more.

Any minor damage is deducted from the deposit and the balance returned. We photograph every panel, the interior, the fuel or charge level and the odometer at handover, and you get those timestamped photos with your digital contract - so there is a record to compare against rather than an argument.
Couples and families of four who want their luggage locked away rather than visible through a hatchback window, and anyone doing airport runs. It is also the most common long-stay choice - the monthly rate is among the lowest in the fleet and the running costs are minimal.
The separate boot is the reason to choose this over the Yaris hatchback. Cars sit unattended at the Na Muang waterfall car park, at Big Buddha and outside beach restaurants for hours at a time, and a sealed boot means nothing on display. On the concrete-slab sections of the ring road towards Nathon the Ativ rides a little more settled than the hatchback thanks to the extra length. Ground clearance is the same, so the same steep villa driveways apply.
Mechanically nothing - same 1.2-litre engine, same CVT gearbox, same running costs. The Ativ is a four-door sedan with a separate locked boot; the Yaris is a five-door hatchback with a shorter body. Take the Ativ for luggage security and airport runs, the Yaris for the lowest rate and the easiest parking.
Two large suitcases plus two cabin bags, with the rear seats still usable by three passengers. It is the smallest car in our fleet that comfortably handles a four-person airport arrival.
It is one of our most popular monthly rentals. The low-season monthly rate works out well below the equivalent daily rate, fuel use is around 5 litres per 100 km, and Toyota servicing is available across the island if anything needs attention during a long stay.
