This is the vehicle that gets up anything on Samui. The steep, broken climbs to the Overlap Stone and the more remote viewpoints are unremarkable in a Fortuner, and after heavy rain, when hill roads wash out and gravel collects on the bends, the clearance and the diesel torque stop being a luxury. The flip side is size: at 4.8 metres and nearly 1.9 metres wide, Chaweng Beach Road and the smaller restaurant car parks are genuinely tight. Diesel also costs less per litre than 95-octane petrol in Thailand, which softens the fuel bill on a long rental.

Is a Toyota Fortuner too big for Koh Samui?
It is big for Chaweng Beach Road and small restaurant car parks, and you will do more three-point turns than in a sedan. Everywhere else on the island it is fine, and on the hill roads it is the most relaxed thing we rent. If you will spend most of your time in the beach towns, a crossover is easier.
Does the Fortuner take diesel or petrol?
Diesel. All the main PTT, Bangchak and Shell stations on the ring road stock it, and it is cheaper per litre than 95-octane petrol in Thailand, which helps on longer rentals.
Is the Fortuner third row usable for adults?
Yes, unlike most seven-seaters in this price range. Adults will sit back there comfortably for the kind of distances you drive on Samui. Luggage space behind the third row is limited, though, so seven passengers plus seven suitcases is not realistic.
