Mitsubishi Triton
- 5 seats
Pickups are everywhere on Koh Samui because they suit the place: high clearance for the hill roads, a bed that carries anything, and diesel engines that are cheap to run over a long rental.
Prices shown are the average day rate, from ฿1,300 in low season. Open a model for its full day, week and month rates, deposit and specification.
A double cab seats five with a rear bench adults can genuinely use, and the bed carries what no car boot will - surfboards, bicycles, dive kit, furniture, building materials, a month's worth of a house move. What the bed will not do is lock or keep the rain out, so anything valuable travels in the cab. If you need seven seats rather than a load bed, the SUVs share most of the same mechanicals and clearance.
Right for divers and surfers with bulky kit, for long-stay residents moving between villas or fitting one out, for site and construction visits, and for renters heading up the rougher interior tracks. Because the double cab seats five, a family can run one as their only vehicle for a month without needing anything else.
Two practical points. First, the open bed is exposed to both weather and opportunists - anything left in it during a rain shower or an hour at the beach is at risk, so plan around the locked cab rather than the bed. Second, these are long vehicles. A double-cab pickup is over 5.3 metres, which makes Chaweng Beach Road and the smaller restaurant car parks genuinely awkward. On the open ring road and the hill climbs, they are the most relaxed thing here. The bed itself is part of the handover photo set, so a dent or scrape from a load is assessed against the record from the day you collected the truck.
The Mitsubishi Triton is the easiest to drive and the most car-like of the three, with the tightest turning circle - the best pickup for someone who has not driven one before. The Isuzu D-Max is the economy champion and the most common workhorse on the island. The Toyota Hilux Revo is the most capable and best-equipped, with the strongest resale reputation and the widest service network in Thailand. Over a monthly rental the diesel economy is worth more than the gap between their daily rates, so choose on how it drives rather than on the headline price.

The long version, including the licence and International Driving Permit requirement, is on the hub: what the rate includes, how the return and deposit refund work and what happens after a breakdown or an accident.
