SUVs for rent on Koh Samui

The mid-size end of the electric fleet: longer, taller and better loaded than the crossovers, with the biggest boots and the fastest charging of any EV we rent. Rates run from ฿1,600 a day for a Hyundai Ioniq 5 to ฿3,000 for a high-season BYD Sealion 7.

How many people and bags actually fit

Five seatbelts, five adults with room to spare, and four large cases in the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7 and BMW iX3 - the only electric cars we rent that take a family of four and their full airport luggage with nothing on anyone's knees. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 carries three large cases behind a rear bench that slides, which buys legroom or boot space depending on which you need that day. The Model Y, Sealion 7 and Ioniq 5 add a front boot for cables. There is no third row anywhere in the electric fleet, so six or seven people still means a petrol SUV or MPV.

Who this suits

Right for families of four or five arriving with everything, for anyone whose villa is up one of the steeper hill roads, and for renters planning the vehicle ferry to Don Sak and on to Khao Sok or Krabi - these are the EVs with the range and the charging speed to make that trip no more complicated than it would be in a petrol car. It is also the category to take if the point of renting a car rather than scooters was comfort, because this is where the equipment and the quiet are.

SUVs on Koh Samui roads

Two things change against the crossovers. The first is size: these are cars of four and a half to five metres, so Chaweng Beach Road, the smaller restaurant car parks and the tighter villa gates all take more care, and the 360-degree cameras fitted to most of them earn their place here rather than being a gadget. The second is that the bigger batteries absorb the hills far better - a climb to Taling Ngam or Chaweng Noi still costs two to three times the flat-road consumption, but starting from 500 km of range rather than 320 means you notice it much less, and the regeneration on the way down is stronger for the extra weight.

Choosing between them

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the entry point and the fastest charger of the four, 10 to 80 per cent in about eighteen minutes on an 800-volt DC charger. The Tesla Model Y is the all-rounder with the best charging network access and the most refined software, and it is the one we book most. The BMW iX3 is the best built and the most conventional to drive, for renters who want a European car rather than a technology statement. The BYD Sealion 7 is the largest, the most powerful and the most expensive, and it is on request rather than always in the fleet - ask early if you want it. Deposits in this class are the highest we take, stated on each model page before you book and refunded within three bank days of a clean return.

What every SUV rental includes

  • Comprehensive first-class insurance with Collision Damage Waiver on every car. Your liability is capped at the deposit, and the deposit is stated on the model page before you book.
  • Unlimited mileage. The odometer is photographed at both ends of the rental as part of the condition record, never as the basis for a distance charge.
  • Delivered at 100% charge. Bring it back above 20% and there is nothing to pay; below that, the metered cost of the electricity from the receipt and nothing on top.
  • No cleaning fee for the sand, dust and damp towels of ordinary island use. Specialist cleaning is charged only against the invoice, and only after you have seen it.
  • Free delivery and collection anywhere on Koh Samui, flight tracked if you are arriving, with every panel, the interior, the state of charge and the odometer photographed at handover.
  • Deposit back within three bank days. If there is genuine damage you get both photo sets and an itemised garage invoice before anything is deducted.
  • 24/7 roadside assistance on the island and the mainland, with a replacement car of the same category or better if yours cannot be fixed where it stands.

The long version, including the licence and International Driving Permit requirement, is on the hub: what the rate includes, how the return and deposit refund work and what happens after a breakdown or an accident.
