How many people and bags actually fit

Five seatbelts, four adults in comfort, and the largest boots in the electric fleet - two large cases and two cabin bags is unremarkable in any of them, and the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal add a front boot on top for the small bags you want out of sight. The one caveat is headroom: the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and Polestar 2 have sloping rooflines that tall adults notice in the back seat. Child seats fit on rear ISOFIX anchors throughout and are fitted before delivery on request.

Who this suits

Right for couples and pairs who want a genuinely nice car rather than just cheap transport - this is the category people choose when the point of renting a car instead of scooters was comfort in the first place. It also suits longer stays, where the running-cost saving adds up, and anyone planning the mainland ferry run: these are the EVs with enough range and fast-charging speed to make Khao Sok or Krabi no more complicated than it would be in a petrol car.

Range anxiety is not the real issue on a 51 km island; charger availability at your specific accommodation is. Confirm before you book whether your hotel or villa has a wallbox, a 3-pin socket you may use, or nothing at all. With a wallbox, these cars are effectively full every morning and you will never visit a public charger. With nothing, plan one weekly stop at a DC charger in Chaweng or on the ring road, which takes about the length of a coffee.

Choosing between them

The Tesla Model 3 has the best charging network access and the most refined software. The BYD Seal is the value choice and the most comfortable over broken surfaces. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is the efficiency champion and will go furthest per charge of anything here. The Polestar 2 is the most solidly built and the most conventional to drive. The BMW i5 and Mercedes-Benz EQE are the executive options, and the quietest cars on the island by some distance - they also carry the highest deposits in our fleet, stated on their model pages before you book, and refunded within three bank days of a clean return like every other car we rent.

What every sedan rental includes

  • Comprehensive first-class insurance with Collision Damage Waiver on every car. Your liability is capped at the deposit, and the deposit is stated on the model page before you book.
  • Unlimited mileage. The odometer is photographed at both ends of the rental as part of the condition record, never as the basis for a distance charge.
  • Delivered at 100% charge. Bring it back above 20% and there is nothing to pay; below that, the metered cost of the electricity from the receipt and nothing on top.
  • No cleaning fee for the sand, dust and damp towels of ordinary island use. Specialist cleaning is charged only against the invoice, and only after you have seen it.
  • Free delivery and collection anywhere on Koh Samui, flight tracked if you are arriving, with every panel, the interior, the state of charge and the odometer photographed at handover.
  • Deposit back within three bank days. If there is genuine damage you get both photo sets and an itemised garage invoice before anything is deducted.
