How a monthly rate is put together

I sat with a renter outside a long-stay block in Bophut in June, an hour after their hatchback arrived. They had already booked the same car twice by the week, and nobody had told them what a month costs. Across our petrol and diesel range, in both seasons, a monthly rate works out at about 17 days of hire for thirty days of use - roughly 43 per cent below thirty daily rates. A week sits in between, at around six days.

The consequence is worth knowing before you book. Past about 18 days of driving, the monthly rate beats the daily rate on every petrol and diesel car we rent, even if you hand the keys back early. So ask for the monthly price at three weeks rather than at four. We quote it unprompted, but a twenty-day booking priced by the day is where the difference quietly hides, and not every desk on the island volunteers it.

The discount is not generosity. A car on a monthly contract is not being cleaned, delivered, collected and photographed every three days, and those condition photographs are the slowest part of a short rental - our team takes them at both ends of every handover. Long bookings cost us less to run, so we charge less for them, and it is also why we hold one specific model for a month rather than promising you a category.

What each petrol and diesel category costs by the month

The climb out of Lamai towards the Chaweng Noi viewpoint sorts these categories out faster than any spec sheet. It is where a small engine carrying four adults and a month of luggage stops feeling like a bargain. The table below gives monthly rates for the 6 petrol and diesel categories we rent, low season and high season, from the cheapest to the dearest model in each, with the seat counts beside them. Dollar figures throughout are approximate and the baht price is the one you pay.

The floor of the whole range is the Suzuki Swift at ฿12,000 (≈$360) a month in low season. We have several of them out on long contracts with couples in Lamai and Maenam who wanted air conditioning, a locked boot and something they could park on the beach road at seven in the evening. Hatchbacks as a group run ฿12,000-฿15,500 (≈$360-$470) in low season, and along the flat coastal strip that is genuinely enough car for a month.

Driving a Toyota Corolla Cross up to the Secret Buddha Garden in April, with the car full, is where ground clearance stopped being an abstraction for me: the last stretch of that track is broken concrete at an angle. Crossover rentals run ฿20,500-฿29,000 (≈$620-$880) in low season, and they are the step most families actually take. The boot also swallows a four-person airport arrival, which is the other thing that catches people out here.

Seven-seat SUVs run ฿22,000-฿30,500 (≈$670-$920) and seven-seat MPVs ฿24,000-฿30,500 (≈$730-$920) in low season. For a month with children I would take the MPV every time: a Toyota Sienta’s sliding doors open in a full Lotus’s car park in Chaweng where an SUV’s swing into the car beside you, and the low floor means nobody is lifting a toddler up into a seat several times a day. Ground clearance only wins the argument if your villa sits up an unsurfaced hill.

Pickup truck rentals sit at ฿22,000-฿25,500 (≈$670-$770), which surprises people who expect a commercial vehicle to be cheap. They go out monthly for one reason: if you are fitting out a house or running a business here, a Toyota Hilux Revo tray does something no car does, and it is what the trades on the island drive. The ceiling of the petrol range is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class at ฿75,000 (≈$2,270) in high season.

Every petrol and diesel model, both seasons

Read the table by boot space and seats before you read it by price. Every model links to its own page, where the luggage figures, the engine and the deposit are stated in full, and where these same two rates appear - both are read from one rate card, so the table here and the page there cannot disagree. Anything marked on request is still a car we can put on a monthly contract, with a little more notice.

Where the price actually steps up

Reading down the tables, the jumps are not where people expect. Hatchback to economy sedan is small. Sedan to compact crossover is the first real step, and it buys clearance. Five seats to seven is the second, and it buys a row rather than luggage space - a seven-seater with every seat occupied carries soft bags, not suitcases. Everything above that buys badge, torque or interior quality rather than capability on an island 25 km across.

Watching what comes back mid-contract tells you the same thing more bluntly: the cars renters ask to swap are the ones bought a size too small, never the ones bought a trim too plain. If the budget is fixed, spend it on the right body type rather than the better version of the wrong one. A month in a well-chosen crossover beats a month in a premium sedan that grounds itself on your own driveway.

What the same month costs in an electric car

Two questions usually arrive together, so here is the rate half of the second one. Electric starts at ฿14,500 (≈$440) a month for the BYD Dolphin, about 21 per cent above our cheapest petrol hatchback, and like for like at every size the petrol car is the cheaper rate. The two ranges do not end in the same place either: the dearest electric month is ฿51,000 (≈$1,550), the dearest petrol month ฿75,000 (≈$2,270).

The rate is not the month, though. Thirty days of island driving is a real fuel bill, and the electricity to cover the same distance is a fraction of it, so the ranking can invert by the end of a long contract - and whether it does turns on where you park at night rather than on the badge. What the monthly rate includes

Everything the daily rate includes, which over thirty days is worth more money than it sounds: comprehensive first-class insurance with a Collision Damage Waiver, free delivery and collection anywhere on Koh Samui, 24/7 roadside assistance on the island and on the mainland, unlimited mileage, and the standard clean between rentals. None of it is an optional extra you decline at handover, and none of it is priced separately by the day.

A monthly contract also carries what an owner would be paying separately. Servicing is ours, and we book it around your week rather than yours around it - we collect the car, leave you another, and bring it back serviced. Tyres are ours. A breakdown is ours, and it ends with a replacement of the same category or better rather than a repair you wait out. None of that appears as a line item at the end of the month.

What the monthly rate does not include

Fuel - full to full, photographed at both ends. The refundable security deposit, ฿3,000 to ฿10,000 (≈$90 to $300) depending on vehicle class and stated on every model page before you book. Traffic fines, which follow the driver rather than the car. The vehicle ferry if you take the car to Surat Thani or Khao Sok - tell us at booking, because that is insurance and paperwork rather than a surcharge we add.

Deliberately absent from that list: an airport delivery fee, a charge for a second named driver, the excess-reduction product a counter would sell you, an early-return penalty, and a cleaning fee for the sand and dust of a month on a tropical island. We photograph every car at collection, and ordinary beach grit has never produced an invoice. Genuine damage does, with the handover photographs, the collection photographs and an itemised garage bill attached.

Low season and high season on a monthly rate

High season runs December to March and July to August; low season is everything else, including the shoulder months, which are quieter and often the nicest weeks of the year to drive here. Across the petrol and diesel range the monthly rate rises about 22 per cent in high season - as little as 7 per cent on some models and as much as 42 per cent on the ones in heaviest demand. Both figures sit on every model page.

Every year around the second week of December I run out of the cheap end of each category first rather than the expensive end: the hatchbacks and the compact crossovers go, and what is left is the premium car nobody wanted at the price. A month starting in November and running into December is a conversation to have with us in advance. Book the December and January weeks early, because a month holds a car out of the daily fleet.

Monthly rental against buying a car

For a stay under a year, renting wins on arithmetic rather than on convenience. The rental month carries insurance, servicing, tyres and roadside assistance inside it and ends with nothing to sell. Buying means the purchase price, Thai registration and transfer paperwork, an annual policy, the maintenance risk on a vehicle whose history you cannot verify, and the discount you will accept to sell it again when you leave - usually at the moment you most need the money.

The other thing a rolling monthly rental buys is the right to change your mind. A pickup for the month you are fitting out a villa, a crossover for the months your family visits, a hatchback for the quiet stretch in between. We swap the car and the rate changes with it; nothing else does. On an island where what you need in March is not what you needed in September, that matters more than it sounds.

Deposits, minimum period and how to book a month

The minimum rental is 3 days on every car and there is no maximum. The deposit is a card payment of ฿3,000 to ฿10,000 (≈$90 to $300) by vehicle class, refunded within three bank days of collection to the same card that paid it. We never take your passport, and you should decline that wherever it is asked for on this island: a passport is not security, it is leverage, and no legitimate rental here needs to hold one.

2 of the 24 petrol and diesel models are marked on request rather than in fleet, which is the premium and specialist end. For a monthly booking that means telling us earlier rather than paying differently: the rate on the page is the rate on the contract. Everything else can be confirmed for the dates you want, usually the same day you ask, and delivered to your hotel, villa or the airport at no charge.
